It’s no surprise that Pete Souza, the official White House photographer, has done all of his recent work with Canon 5D Mark II cameras. Many thousands of photographers have made this camera a popular workhorse in the professional photography world. As of early 2012, it had more than 1,400 customer reviews on the B&H Photo web site, averaging 5 out of 5 starts. B&H states that “99% of respondents would recommend this [camera] to a friend”.
I’ve used the Canon 5D Mark II camera almost since it was introduced, and before that used its predecessor. The original 5D was a landmark camera, the first to offer a full-frame sensor in a camera that was affordable for many professional photographers. Its moderate weight and high quality sensor made a favorite among National Geographic photographers. The 5D II improves upon the original 5D, offering better high ISO performance, more resolution and a more refined body … and it can do video too. Autofocus is excellent on the center point, so it worlds well for weddings, events and portraits. It is excellent for many other subjects too, including landscape and architecture. The autofocus of Canon’s 1D series would be preferable for fast-action sports, but the heaviness and size of 1D cameras make them too cumbersome for 8+ hour wedding days.
