A Sense of Place

Friday August 15th 2008, 12:27 pm

Clients usually choose their wedding location very carefully. In telling the story of a wedding, one of my goals is to create photographs that give a sense of the location. This may include architecture, weather, patterns, details, lighting effects, window views and other visual elements. Here are some examples from a wedding at Tribeca Rooftop in Manhattan.

A Sequence

When something interesting is happening, I’ll often keep shooting. This can result in a sequence of photos that together tell a little story.

During cocktail hour, this little member of the wedding party discovers a glass of champagne. His mom promptly takes it away and offers a plate of cheese, crackers and grapes instead.

They were walking toward me, from a dimly lit area toward the windows.  The moment was truly unposed and brief, and the light was beautiful.

Little moments and details

Friday June 13th 2008, 10:21 pm

Weddings have their big moments, such as the ring exchange, the first dance and the cake cutting, and these all make for important photos. I also enjoy finding the little moments and details that make each wedding unique and personal. While the whole day presents such opportunities, lovely moments and details are often found before the ceremony, when everyone is getting ready.

4th Place, Getting Ready

Saturday June 07th 2008, 12:20 am

My photo of Michelle getting ready earned 4th place in the Getting Ready category in the Q1 2008 Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA) photo contest.

I’m gratified by a judge’s comment:  ”Intimate angle and emotion combine to convey a pure sense of joy in the moment for this bride being helped with her wedding dress. Photographer was able to quietly place him/herself within the activity without interfering to capture an exceptional scene.”

See the rest of this quarter’s WPJA winners at this link.

Setting the scene with beautiful details

Tuesday June 03rd 2008, 11:48 pm

With the wedding season in full swing, I’ll have many new photos to blog in the months ahead.  Today I want to mix in a few favorites from my archives, as I do from time to time.

In telling the story of a wedding, it’s important to include photos of the location and beautiful details.  Here are some examples from Allison and David’s wedding at the Angel Orensanz Center.

The Angel Orensanz Center, on Norfolk Street in Manhattan, was originally a synagogue.  When opened in 1849 it was the largest synagogue in the country. In 1986, sculptor Angel Orensanz purchased the building to serve as his studio.  It now hosts arts events and performances, and is a popular place for weddings. In 1997, it was the site of the wedding of Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick.  About.com includes the Center in its list of Top 10 NYC Wedding Locations - The Best Places to Get Married in New York.
