When I first got into photography, I spent countless hours developing black & white film and making black & white prints in my own darkroom. Today I still practice the art of black & white photography in the digital world.
Black & white goes back to the early days of photography when color photography had not yet been invented. Some of the best photographers worked exclusively in black & white. Although color photography is much more like the world we see, black & white still fascinates — perhaps because it’s a little more abstract, a little more mysterious. Black & white has a rich artistic tradition, and its expressive power has stood the test of time.
