Every portrait is a collaboration, an expression, a moment in time, and a point of view. You can make your portrait session planned or more or less spontaneous. I welcome your questions and would be happy to advise you on location, clothing, etc.
Portraits can be formal or casual or both. Portraits usually have people looking toward the camera, but can also have people walking, playing, etc. A session can include traditional posed portraits and unposed moments such as those a photojournalist would capture.
I am a photographer based in Cresskill in Bergen County, NJ and have been creating professional portraits for over 15 years. I don’t work from a studio, so all portraits are on location. We can include surroundings that are familiar and meaningful to you. If requested, I can bring a backdrop to create a studio-like background.
I’m available for portrait sessions in NJ, NY and CT. I’m generally within a 50-mile radius of Cresskill, NJ. That includes Bergen County, Hudson County, Passaic County, Essex County, Morris County, Middlesex County, Somerset County, Rockland County, Fairfield County, Westchester, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, State Island, Long Island,
A typical family portrait session may take 1 to 2 hours. A family portrait session can be just your immediate family or it can be planned around a big family get together or reunion. Outdoor portraits are usually preferred, but indoor portrait are fine too. It’s generally no problem to reschedule portraits if the weather looks bad; just call me at least a day before the scheduled session.
If the portrait session happens at your home, it may be practical to include any family pets in the portraits, or to plan a change of clothing for a different look mid-way through. Feel free to express your personality in clothing and style. There’s no need for everyone to wear the same color, but feel free to do so if you like.
For sessions that include small children, it’s best to allow the children lots of play time or to include some fun activity. Try to make the session stress-free and casual. Real smiles and genuine laughter always look better than forced smiles.
Engagement portraits can happen in a park or in the streets. Feel free to suggest a location that is meaningful to you. Perhaps it’s where you first met, a favorite bar or cafe, an old historic street, an amusement park, a waterfall or bridge, etc.
I also offer: professional headshots, maternity portraits, newborn portraits, senior portraits, business portraits and portraits for social media.
After a portrait session, I edit the photos and adjust them for brightness, color and contrast. I also create a selection of black & white portraits. I’ll upload the photos to a private online gallery. Some portrait photographers do in-studio sales sessions where you have a short time in which to buy prints or never see the photos again. I don’t do that. Your gallery will be online for 9 months so you have plenty of time to order prints. During that time, there will be typically be some sales when the print prices are reduced.
Get in touch today with any questions or to schedule your portraits. I look forward to working with you!
